A portion of the art I have made in my free time has been centered around anthropology. I was immensely inspired by the Robert Flaherty documentary, Nanook of the North. It is a film from 1922 about a family of Eskimos struggling to survive in the arctic. One memorable scene in the film depicts Nanook eating a sea biscuit and lard. This meal is a staple of the Eskimos; it is essential for maintaining desirable body temperatures. I imagine this scene generally contrives feelings of disgust to the viewer, however the purpose of consuming a sea biscuit and lard is so extremely profound. It is a visual expression of the saying “a diamond in the rough” something which I had often been called throughout high school. When I am in the process of illustrating, or creating art I am in a raw, intense, and emotional state of perspective similar to Nanook when he consumes his sea biscuit and lard. Art has made me wholesome, it has helped me survive in a world that is ever changing.
